Invertebrate

Als Wirbellose oder Invertebrata (Synonym: Evertebrata) bezeichnet man alle Tiere ohne eine Wirbelsäule. Zu dieser informellen Gruppe (Formtaxon) von Lebewesen gehört die Mehrzahl aller bekannten Tierarten. Sie werden der Verwandtschaftsgruppe der Wirbeltiere (Vertebrata) gegenüber gestellt.

Systematik

Wirbellose bilden keine einheitliche und natürliche Verwandtschaftsgruppe. Neben einer Reihe von Chordatieren (Chordata) zählt man alle nicht-Chordaten zu den Wirbellosen; darunter unter anderem die folgenden Stämme:
