Die American Psychiatric Association (APA) ist die wichtigste Vereinigung von Psychiaterinnen und Psychiatern in Ausbildung in den Vereinigten Staaten und die weltweit einflussreichste Vereinigung des Fachgebiets. Die American Psychiatric Association mit Sitz in Arlington County ist nicht mit der American Psychological Association zu verwechseln, die ebenfalls mit APA abgekürzt wird. Die Vereinigung hat rund 36.000 Mitglieder, die vorwiegend US-Amerikaner sind, aber einige Mitglieder stammen auch aus anderen Ländern. Die APA gibt verschiedene Zeitschriften und Publikationen sowie das Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)-Handbuch heraus.
Geschichte
Bei einem Treffen im Jahre 1844 in Philadelphia gründeten 13 Personen die Association of Medical Superintendents of American Institutions for the Insane (AMSAII), aus der später 1921 die American Psychiatric Association wurde.
Organisation und Mitgliedschaft
Die APA wird von einem Präsidenten (gegenwärtig Pedro Ruiz, der Steven Sharfstein nachfolgte) und einem Board of Trustees mit einem Exekutivkomitee geleitet. Die APA hält jährlich eine Konferenz ab.
Wichtige Persönlichkeiten
Adolf Meyer wurde als Präsident der American Psychiatric Association bekannt. Er war eine der einflussreichsten Persönlichkeiten der Psychiatrie in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts.
Robert Spitzer war eine der Schlüsselpersonen in der Entwicklung der ersten Versionen des DSM.[1]
Donald Ewen Cameron ist vor allem durch seine Arbeiten im Bereich der Bewusstseinskontrolle für die CIA bekannt geworden. Er war von 1952 bis 1953 Präsident der APA.
