Das Jewish Museum of Australia in Melbourne wurde 1982 von Rabbi Lubofski gegründet. Er kam 1957 nach Australien und leitete die jüdische Kongregation St. Kilda bis 1988. Sein Ziel war es, eine Einrichtung zur Entwicklung neuer Möglichkeiten zur Bewahrung und Pflege des jüdischen Kulturerbes ins Leben zu rufen. 1995 wechselte das Museum von der Synagoge Melbourne in ein Gebäude nahe dem Beth-Israel-Tempel in St Kilda. Das Jewish Museum of Australia erlangte durch sein umfassendes Bildungsprogramm nationale Anerkennung und hat über die Jahre zahlreiche Ausstellungen präsentiert.
Seit 2008 ist das Jewish Museum of Australia Einsatzstelle des Österreichischen Gedenkdienstes.
