Die Kachina-Figuren oder einfach Kachina (korrekt: „Katsina“ pl. „Katsinam“) sind Holzpuppen, die bei den Hopi, den Zuñi und anderen Pueblo-Indianern im Südwesten von Nordamerika die Geister der Natur und der Ahnen symbolisieren. Aus diesem Grunde werden sie als heilige Wesen verehrt. Kachina wirken als Vermittler zwischen den Göttern und den Menschen und bringen den lebensnotwendigen Regen zur Erde.

Dargestellt werden die Kachina durch maskierte und kostümierte Tänzer. Außerdem werden kleine Figuren aus Pappelwurzelholz (Cottonwood) geschnitzt, die die Kachina darstellen sollen. Die Tänzer verschenken die vielgestaltigen Puppen an junge Mädchen, um ihnen Gesundheit und spätere Fruchtbarkeit zu bringen.

Ab etwa 1900 kam vor allem unter den weißen Touristen ein großes Interesse für die Kachina-Figuren auf und die Puppen wurden zu begehrten Sammlerobjekten. Aus diesem Grund begannen viele Hopi mit der kommerziellen Herstellung der Puppen. Heute gilt die Herstellung als hohe Form der Schnitzkunst und die Kachina-Puppen erzielen hohe Preise auf dem indianischen Kunstmarkt. Bereits 1901 sammelte das Berliner Museum für Völkerkunde eine größere Anzahl dieser Figuren.

Die älteren Figuren werden besonders in Frankreich hoch gehandelt. Den höchsten Preis erzielte im Dezember 1997 bei Sotheby’s in New York eine „Salako“-Figur für $ 294.000. Künstler wie Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Piero Dorazio, André Malraux, Horst Antes und andere sammelten die Katsinam.
