Lineament

Ein Lineament ist eine gerade oder leicht gebogene, linienhafte Struktur, an der eine Oberfläche oder ein Körper charakteristische Merkmale aufweist oder an der sich der Aufbau ändert.

Im allgemeinen Sprachgebrauch wird als Lineament auch ein Charakterzug bezeichnet.

Geologie

Der Begriff wird unter anderem in der Geologie für ein System oder eine Zone von Störungslinien oder Brüchen der Erdkruste verwendet, die weit in die Tiefe reichen (oft bis in den oberen Erdmantel). Geologische Lineamente und ähnliche tektonische Schwächezonen machen deutlich, dass an ihnen tiefwirkende Kräfte über längere Zeiträume der Erdgeschichte wirksam sind.

Zu den größten dieser Strukturen zählen der Ostafrikanische Grabenbruch und die Mittelmeer-Mjösen-Zone, als deren Fortsetzung der Oberrheingraben und der Oslograben bis heute sichtbar sind.
