Maryland State House
Das Maryland State House in Annapolis, Maryland ist Sitz der Maryland General Assembly, des Parlamentes des Bundesstaats.
Das Haus stammt aus den Jahren 1772 bis 1779 und ist damit das älteste kontinuierlich benutzte State House der USA. Das 1968 als National Historic Landmark ausgezeichnete Gebäude beherbergte vom 26. November 1783 bis zum 3. Juni 1784 als Sitz des Kontinentalkongresses. In ihm unterzeichnete George Washington am 23. Dezember 1783 nach dem gewonnen Revolutionskrieg den Rücktritt als Kommandant der Continental Army[1], und der Kontinentalkongress ratifizierte hier am 14. Januar 1784 den Vertrag von Paris, der den Unabhängigkeitskrieg der USA beendete.
Das Gebäude, das dritte State House an dieser Stelle, wurde von Joseph Horatio Anderson gestaltet. Er entwarf auch die Holzkuppel, die die größte Holzkuppel der USA ohne Nägel ist und die von einem von Benjamin Franklin gestalteten Blitzableiter gekrönt wird.[2] Forscher meinen, dass Anderson die Kuppel nach dem Vorbild des Karlsruher Schlossturm gestaltete.
