Im Norden wird er durch die Region Morogoro begrenzt, im Osten durch den Tunduru District, im Süden durch Mosambik und schließlich im Westen sowohl durch Songea Urban als auch durch Songea Rural.
Der Distrikt hatte im Jahre 2002 185.131 Einwohner.[2]
