Norman Rockwell

Norman Percevel Rockwell (* 3. Februar 1894 in New York; † 8. November 1978 in Stockbridge, Massachusetts) war ein US-amerikanischer Maler und Illustrator des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts. Mehr als 40 Jahre lang schuf er die Titelbilder der Saturday Evening Post, was ihm eine hohe Popularität verschaffte. Rockwells Arbeiten (Americana) gelten sowohl als amerikanisch-patriotisch wie auch als kommerziell, und haben bis heute ebenso glühende Anhänger wie kritische Verächter, die seine Arbeiten als Kitsch bezeichnen.

1943 entstanden Rockwells bekannteste Werke, die vier Einzelbilder Four Freedoms (Die vier Freiheiten), die von einer Rede des Präsidenten Franklin Delano Roosevelt zum Thema Freiheit inspiriert worden waren. Insgesamt schuf er über 2000 Werke, von denen jedoch viele vernichtet wurden.

In Deutschland ist vor allem Rockwells Santa Claus populär, der alljährlich zu Weihnachten in der Welt am Sonntag zusammen mit dem Artikel Gibt es einen Weihnachtsmann? abgedruckt wird.
