Ocilla ist eine Stadt im US-Bundesstaat Georgia. Sie befindet sich im Irwin County und ist dessen Verwaltungssitz.

Geografie

Ocilla liegt zentral im Irwin County. Die Nachbarorte sind Fitzgerald, Holt und Irwinville. Die nächste größere Stadt, Albany, befindet sich etwa 101 Kilometer westlich, die Hauptstadt Georgias, Atlanta, etwa 323 Kilometer nördlich. Das Stadtgebiet erstreckt sich über eine Fläche von 6,7 km².

Bevölkerung

Die Einwohnerzahl beträgt 3.270, davon 48% Männer und 52% Frauen (Stand: 2000). Im Vergleich zum Zensus 1990 ist die Bevölkerungszahl um 2,8% gestiegen. Das Durchschnittsalter der Bürger von Ocilla beträgt 30,7 Jahre. 59,4% der Einwohner sind Afroamerikaner und 38,9% Weiße. Im Jahr 1999 betrug das durchschnittliche jährliche Pro-Kopf-Einkommen 10.573 Dollar, also deutlich unter dem US-Durchschnitt (21.587 Dollar). Etwa 33,1% der Gesamtbevölkerung und 27,5% der Familien leben unterhalb der Armutsgrenze. Damit ist der Anteil der Armen wesentlich höher als im Bundesdurchschnitt.

Öffentliche Einrichtungen

Ocilla verfügt über eine öffentliche High School sowie eine Primary- und eine Elementary-School.

Persönlichkeiten

Paul Grant Rogers, ehemaliger Abgeordneter im US-Repräsentantenhaus, wurde am 4. Juni 1921 in Ocilla geboren.
