Operation Planning and Control (OPC) ist ein System, das ursprünglich (als Idee) den Einsatz von Operatoren in der EDV überflüssig machen bzw. stark einschränken sollte. Hiermit sollte die potenzielle „Fehlerquelle Mensch“ soweit wie möglich ausgeschlossen werden.
Das OPC-System versetzt die Planer (Arbeitsvorbereiter) der täglichen Abläufe auf einem IBM-Computer-System in die Lage, die notwendigen Programm- bzw. Job-Abläufe inkl. der zu berücksichtigenden Abhängigkeiten der Jobs zueinander auf ein Jahr im voraus zu planen, wodurch diese Jobs automatisch anlaufen und bei fehlerfreiem Ende automatisch den Start des nächsten Jobs oder der nächsten abhängigen Applikation freigeben (Zusammenfassung mehrerer Jobs).
Es gibt im OPC verschiedene Möglichkeiten der Ablaufplanung. So kann anhand von Regeln festgelegt werden, dass eine Applikation z. B. täglich, wöchentlich, an jedem dritten Mittwoch im Monat oder an jedem Werktag in Kalenderwoche 40 anläuft. Feste Daten für den Start werden über einen Kalender gesteuert. Ebenso kann ein bestimmtes Ereignis den Start auslösen.
Mitte der 1990er Jahre bündelte IBM die Systemmanagementsoftware im Tochterunternehmen Tivoli. Die Software OPC wurde dabei umbenannt in IBM Tivoli Workload Scheduler (TWS). Diese kann auf folgenden Plattformen und Topologien laufen:
