Paihia liegt im Norden der Nordinsel Neuseelands im Far-North-Distrikt der Region Northland 60 Kilometer nördlich von Whangarei. Einst ein kleines Fischerdorf, ist die in der Bay of Islands liegende Ortschaft nun ein beliebtes Tourismuszentrum der Nordinsel.

Paihia ist wegen des nahe gelegen Dorfes Waitangi bekannt. Dort wurde 1840 der Vertrag von Waitangi unterschrieben. Außerdem wurde in Paihia das erste neuseeländische Cricket-Spiel abgehalten. Auf der anderen Seite der Bucht liegt der kleine Ort Russell, von 1840 bis 1841 die erste Hauptstadt Neuseelands.

In Paihia wurde die erste Kirche Neuseelands erbaut. Sie wurde am 21. September 1823 eröffnet. Die jetzige Steinkirche, St Paul's Anglican Church, ist die fünfte Kirche an dieser Stelle. Sie wurde 1925 errichtet.[2]
