Pax Britannica

Die Pax Britannica war ein Prinzip der Welt- und Kolonialherrschaft im 19. Jahrhundert.

Die Idee war, in Anlehnung an die Pax Romana des alten Rom, die Welt oder zumindest das Britische Empire zu regieren mit Hilfe der Ideen und Konzepte des elisabethanischen Zeitalters, der christlichen Religion und einer sich entwickelt habenden Ethik des freien Handels in einer befriedeten Welt nach englischem Recht.

Die Führungsrolle sollte die entwickelte Gesellschaft Großbritanniens übernehmen. Kulturen und Nationen, die sich dieser Herrschaft nicht beugen mochten, mussten mit der Anwendung institutionalisierter, wirtschaftlicher und gegebenenfalls militärischer Gewalt rechnen.

Erste Ansätze zur Pax Britannica entstanden aus der elisabethanischen Zeit, als im Vergleich zu Spanien, Portugal und auch den Niederlanden die Royal Navy und der britische Kolonialbesitz auf der Welt ständig wuchs. Voraussetzung ihrer Errichtung war der wirtschaftliche Vorsprung des Vereinigten Königreichs zu Beginn der Industriellen Revolution, der Machtverlust Frankreichs nach den napoleonischen Kriegen, die Kontrolle der wichtigsten Seerouten und Marinebasen und die uneingeschränkte Seeherrschaft.

Dieses Größenwachstum schien gemäß protestantischer Ethik als Nachweis und Rechtfertigung geeignet, dass dieser Lauf der Welt dem göttlichen Willen entspreche.
