Percy Amaury Talbot

Percy Amaury Talbot (* 26. Juni 1877; † 28. Dezember 1945 in Cheltenham) war ein vielseitig interessierter britischer Beamter, Botaniker, Anthropologe und Afrikaforscher. Er stand in Diensten des Nigerian Political Service.

Als ethnographischer Klassiker gilt sein Buch In the Shadow of the Bush (1912).

Der Autor reiste gemeinsam mit seiner Frau Dorothy Amaury Talbot (1871–1916) ausgiebig im Oban District von Southern Nigeria und einem Teil von Kamerun, um das Volk der Ekoi sowie die Naturgeschichte des Gebietes zu studieren. Das Werk berichtet über Religion, den Geheimbund Egbo, Juju, Stellung der Frauen, Geburtsbräuche, Divination, Zauberei, Trauerzeremonien, Krieg, Regierung, Folklore usw. mit detaillierten Appendices über Tabus, Clubs, Anthropometrie, Orthographie, Grammatik, Vokabularien, Botanik, Zoologie, Mineralogie, Meteorologie und Geographie.
