Der größte Teil des Landbesitzes wurde als Holzfällerland erworben.

Plum Creek wurde von Burlington Resources (ehemals Teil vom Unternehmen Burlington Northern Railroad) am 8. Juni 1989 abgetrennt. Plum Creek wandelte sich am 1. Juli 1999 zu einem Real Estate Investment Trust um.

Plum Creek Timber verkauft und managt Immobilien. Des Weiteren produziert das Unternehmen Produkte aus Holz und stellt Papier und Pappe her.

Am 31. Dezember 2004 gehörten dem Unternehmen rund 32.000 km² Land in den Vereinigten Staaten.
