Raffaele Garofalo

Raffaele Garofalo (* 1852; † 1934) war ein italienischer Jurist, der neben Cesare Lombroso und Enrico Ferri maßgeblich an der Begründung der italienischen Kriminologie des 19. Jahrhunderts, der "scuola positiva" ("positive Schule") beteiligt war und darüber hinaus den Begriff "Kriminologie" selbst prägte. Der Begriff "Kriminologie" wird dem französischen Anthropologen Paul Topinard zugeschrieben, der den Begriff erstmals 1879 verwendet haben soll. Bekannt gemacht wurde der Begriff jedoch erst durch das 1885 erschienene Werk "Criminologia" von Raffaele Garofalo. Darin stellt Garofalo das Konzept des „natürlichen Verbrechens“ vor. Unter „natürlichem Verbrechen“ verstand Garofalo die Verletzung des durchschnittlichen Maßes an Mitleid und Redlichkeit.
