ResearchGATE ist eine kostenlose Social-Networking-Seite im Internet, die sich an Wissenschaftler aus allen Disziplinen richtet. Die Plattform bietet freien Zugang zu Web 2.0-Applikationen, wie einer semantischen Suche nach Artikeln aus Fachzeitschriften, die in einer Datenbank mit über 30 Millionen Einträgen enthalten sind. Wer beispielsweise das Abstract eines medizinischen Fachartikels in die Suchmaschine einkopiert, erhält sofort sämtliche verfügbaren relevanten Beiträge. Dieses Prinzip funktioniert auch für die Suche nach Kollegen weltweit, die an ähnlichen Themen forschen. Weitere Tools sind Filesharing, Foren und Diskussionsgruppen. Ausgangspunkt dafür ist ein persönliches Forscherprofil.

Viele Wissenschaftsorganisationen und -konferenzen wie die International Academy of Life Sciences (IALS) und die European Science Foundation nutzen ResearchGATE als Plattform für die Kommunikation zwischen Mitgliedern und Teilnehmern. Zahlreiche Professoren von internationalen Universitäten sollen Qualität und Unabhängigkeit in einem Advisory Board garantieren.

In weniger als einem Jahr hat die Plattform mit Sitz in Boston und Hannover mehr als 30.000 Mitglieder gewonnen.
