Richard Christopher Carrington (* 26. Mai 1826 in Chelsea; † 27. November 1875 in Redhill, England) war ein englischer Astronom.

Leben und Karriere

Carrington war drei Jahre Assistent bei Chevalier in Durham und baute später seine eigene Sternwarte in Redhill, auf der er 1854 Zirkumpolarsterne erforschte. Darüber hinaus untersuchte er die Sonne, angeregt durch Schwabes Entdeckung des Zusammenhangs zwischen der Periode der Sonnenflecken und dem Erdmagnetismus. Im Jahr 1859 entdeckt Carrington die Sonneneruptionen der Sonne. Das gelegentlich nach Carrington benannte solare Weißlicht-Ereignis vom 1. September 1859 ist jedoch unabhängig auch von Richard Hodgson beobachtet worden. 1863 entdeckte Carrington die differentielle Rotation der Sonne. Sein Sternkatalog war ein wichtiger zeitgenössischer Beitrag zur Erforschung astronomischer Objekte.
