Robert Byron (* 26. Februar 1905 in London; † 24. Februar 1941) war ein britischer Schriftsteller

Leben

Byron studierte in Oxford und verschaffte sich in Eigeninitiative Kenntnisse in Kunst- und Architekturgeschichte. Er unternahm Reisen auf das europäische Festland und in den Orient und verfasste den 1937 erschienenen Reisebericht The Road to Oxiana (dt. "Der Weg nach Oxiana", 2004 im Eichborn Verlag erschienen, ISBN 3-8218-4520-1).

Als er im Alter von 36 Jahren in der Bucht von Biskaya auf einem Schiff Richtung Persien unterwegs war, um dort als Kriegsberichterstatter zu arbeiten, wurde dieses von einem deutschen U-Boot beschossen; dabei kam Byron ums Leben.

Für den Reiseschriftsteller Bruce Chatwin, der für eine Neuauflage von The Road to Oxiana das Vorwort schrieb, ist die Niederschrift von Byrons Besuch im Persien und Afghanistan der dreissiger Jahre das beste Buch aller Zeiten.
