Der "Royal Pavilion" in Brighton

Den Royal Pavilion ließ der Prinz von Wales Georg IV. in den Jahren 1815 bis 1822 im Seebad Brighton in England erbauen. Architekt war John Nash.

Seine Vorbilder waren die Mogulpaläste in Indien, mit seiner Innenausstattung im chinesischen Stil ist der Pavilion der exotischste Palast in Europa.

Nach dem Tod des Erbauers George IV im Jahre 1830 wurde der Palast zwar noch von seinem Nachfolger, William IV. benutzt. Königin Victoria aber besuchte ungern Brighton und bedauerte den Mangel an Privatsphäre in dem bereits 1841 von der Eisenbahn erschlossenen Seebad. Ab 1845 plante die Regierung deshalb, den Palast zu verkaufen. 1850 ging er um £53,000 an die Stadt Brighton. In der Folge diente das Gebäude zu Versammlungszwecken, im Ersten Weltkrieg dann als Lazarett für verwundete Soldaten aus Indien und Westindien. Seit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg hat die Stadt große Anstrengungen unternommen, den Pavillon originalgetreu zu restaurieren.

Der Prinz von Wales besuchte Brighton zuerst 1783, kurz nachdem er die Mehrheit erreichte hatte. Die an der Küste gelegene Stadt wurde bekannt durch seinen Onkel Herzog von Cumberland, mit dem er die Vorlieben für Kochkünste, Spiele und Theater teilte, und mit dem er in Brighton im Grove House lebte.
