Streptococcus bovis ist ein Gram-positives Bakterium, das in den meisten Fällen beim Menschen keine Erkrankungen auslöst. In seltenen Fällen kann es durch Streptococcus bovis zum Auftreten von Septikämien (Blutvergiftungen), Meningitis (Hirnhautentzündung), Wundinfektionen, Peritonitis (Bauchfellentzündung), Endokarditis oder Pharyngitis (Rachenentzündung) kommen.

Seit einiger Zeit wird diskutiert, dass Infektionen des Darms mit Streptococcus bovis ein Risikofaktor für die Entstehung von Darmkrebs sind. Die genaue Pathophysiologie der Krebsentstehung durch Infektion mit Streptococcus bovis ist bisher aber nicht bekannt.
