Balthild

Bathilde, auch Balthild, (* um 630 in England; † 30. Januar wohl 680 in Chelles) war die Ehefrau des fränkischen Merowingerkönigs Chlodwig II. von Neustrien.

Bathilde wurde angeblich als Kind von Wikingern entführt und 641 an den merowingischen Hof verkauft. Dort soll sie Chlodwig II. kennengelernt haben. 649 heiratete Bathilde den Frankenkönig. Als Königin schaffte sie die Sklaverei unter Christen ab und gründete mildtätige Einrichtungen und Klöster wie Chelles bei Paris und Corbie. Ende 657 starb Chlodwig II., und Bathilde fungierte bis um 665 als Regentin für Chlothar III., während die Hausmeier Erchinoald und ab 659 Ebroin die Regierungsgeschäfte wahrnahmen.

675 zog sich Bathilde in das Kloster Chelles zurück, wo sie bis zu ihrem Tod lebte. Dort wollte sie angeblich den niedrigsten Rang bekleiden und soll sich durch besondere Demut und Nächstenliebe ausgezeichnet haben.

Papst Nikolaus I. sprach sie im 9. Jahrhundert heilig.
