Entstehungsgeschichte

Nach dem offiziell letzten Death-Album The Sound of Perseverance wendet sich Chuck Schuldiner - gelangweilt vom Gesangsstil im Death Metal - seiner neuen Band Control Denied zu und veröffentlicht mit The Fragile Art Of Existence das erste und einzige Album dieser Band. Mit Shannon Hamm an der Gitarre und Richards Christy am Schlagzeug findet Chuck Schuldiner Unterstützung aus der letzten Besetzung von Death. Nach der von Chuck noch selbst eingesungenen Demo A Moment Of Clarity findet sich in Tim Aymar ein Sänger, der das Album einsingt und fester Bestandteil der Band wird.

Musikstil

The Fragile Art Of Existence kann als progressiver Power Metal umschrieben werden und enthält mehr Elemente aus dem Power Metal als dies schon bei vorhergehenden Death-Alben der Fall war. Die Songs sind weiterhin komplex aufgebaut, beinhalten viele progressive Elemente und stellen damit den nächsten Schritt der schon bei der Vorgängerband wahrzunehmenden Weiterentwicklung dar - Riffing und Melodieführung entsprechen unverwechselbar Chuck Schuldiners Handschrift. Ein weiteres Unterscheidungsmerkmal zu Death ist der klare Gesang von Tim Aymar. Dem (Fretless-)Bass von Steve DiGiorgio wird relativ viel Platz eingeräumt, was dieser virtuos auszunutzen weiß.

Bedeutung

Das Album wird von der weltweiten Presse durchgehend positiv rezensiert und wohlwollend aufgenommen. Es gilt unter Fans und Kritikern als hochwertiger Beitrag des Genre. Als letztem musikalischen Output von Chuck Schuldiner kommt dem Werk besondere Bedeutung zu.
