Handlung und Aufbau

„The King and the Clown“ spielt im Korea des 16. Jahrhunderts und handelt von einem weiblich agierenden Straßentheater-Darsteller, der zwischen den Annäherungsversuchen des tyrannischen Königs und der Liebe zu seinem männlichen Schauspieler-Kollegen schwankt.

„The King and the Clown“ ist grundsätzlich ein historisches Drama, welches im Königspalast spielt, zusammen mit traditionellen Trommeln und Volks-Aufführungen, aber mit einem eigenen einzigartigen Stil, nicht zuletzt wegen seines einfallsreichen und symbolischen Gebrauchs von Farben.

Erfolg

Mit mehr als 12 Millionen Zuschauern in Südkorea (über 85 Milliarden Won Einspielergebnis, rund 85 Millionen Euro) war der Film schon im März 2006 der erfolgreichste koreanische Film aller Zeiten. „Der König und der Clown“ erreichte die 10-Millionen-Grenze nur 45 Tage nach seiner Premiere. Das bedeutet, dass jeder vierte Koreaner und fast die Hälfte aller Erwachsenen den Film gesehen haben. Er löste damit den Film Brotherhood – Wenn Brüder aufeinander schießen müssen ab. Dieser verzeichnete 11,5 Millionen Kinobesucher.

The King and the Clown wurde mit einem Budget von nur vier Milliarden Won gedreht, ohne Top-Besetzung und -Regisseur. Hinzu kommt, dass es sich um ein Tabuthema in Korea dreht: Homosexualität.

Sonstiges

Südkorea hat den Film ins Rennen um den Oscar 2006 für den besten fremdsprachigen Film geschickt.
