Die Universität ist auf drei verschiedene Standorte verteilt: Das Mlimani Campus sowie die Muhimbili und UCLAS University Colleges. Es gibt 16 Fakultäten mit ca. 12.000 Studenten. Der Haupt-campus liegt etwa 13 Kilometer westlich von Daressalam auf dem Observation Hill.

Geschichte
Die Universität wurde am 25. März 1970 gegründet, nachdem die University of East Africa aufgelöst wurde. Vorher war die UDSM im Verbund mit der Makerere-Universität in (Uganda) und der University of Nairobi in (Kenia).
