Die Universität ist im Jahre 1957 gegründet worden. 2010 hatte sie 26.451 Studenten und 3.505 graduierte Studenten sowie 1.047 Dozenten.
Besonders bekannt ist die Universität Waterloo für ihr co-op-Programm, einer Art berufsbegleitendes Studium, und für ihre mathematischen und ingenieurwissenschaftlichen Fachrichtungen.

Kooperationen
Es bestehen zahlreiche Austauschprogramme, unter anderem mit der Universität Mannheim, der Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg und der Technischen Universität Hamburg-Harburg. Gemeinsam mit der Universität Mannheim wird der Masterstudiengang „Intercultural German Studies“ (Joint Degree) angeboten.[1] Das älteste Austauschprogramm in der Faculty of Engineering wird zur TU Braunschweig unterhalten.
