Washington Times

Die Washington Times ist eine US-amerikanische Tageszeitung.

Sie wurde 1982 von Mun Sun-myung und anderen Mitgliedern der Vereinigungskirche als konservative Alternative zur Washington Post gegründet. Am 31. März 2007 betrug ihre Auflage 102.351 Exemplare, etwa ein Siebtel der Auflage ihrer Hauptkonkurrentin, die Washington Post.

Motivation der Gründung und des Betriebs

Die Times ist eine Veröffentlichung von News World Communications, die von der Columbia Journalism Review als die "Medienarm von Sun Myung Moons Vereinigungskirche" beschrieben wird. Die Washington Post war Anfang der 1980er Jahre eine der Hauptkritikerinnen des konservativen Antikommunismus von Mun gewesen, und nach dem Konkurs des Washington Stars die einzige Tageszeitung der US-Hauptstadt. Mun erkannte das Nutzen der Medien im Dienste seiner Kirche, wie er später im Dezember 2000 erklärte:"We even have to utilize the media for the sake of church development. The church is the mind and the media is the body, to reach the external world. We should begin that movement and activity in the United States, because the Washington Times and UPI are headquartered there. Once we establish our organization in the United States, it can be expanded to the world without much alteration."^[1]

Bis 2006 hatte der Verlag Verluste in Höhe von drei Milliarden US-Dollar erlitten, um die konservative Botschaft der Times verbreiten zu können, Verluste, die von der Vereinigungskirche in Form von Subventionen ersetzt wurden.^[2]

Politische Tendenz

The Times ist politisch konservativ. Es war die bevorzugte Zeitung von US-Präsident Ronald Reagan. Zusammen mit Fox News Channel und Talkradio wird es beispielhaft für die konservativen Medien der Vereinigten Staaten genannt.^[3][4][5] 1997 sagte Ronald Reagan über die Times:

The American people know the truth. You, my friends at The Washington Times, have told it to them. It wasn't always the popular thing to do. But you were a loud and powerful voice. Like me, you arrived in Washington at the beginning of the most momentous decade of the century. Together, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work. And -- oh, yes -- we won the Cold War.^[6]

Laut der Columbia Journalism Review, "Because of its history of a seemingly ideological approach to the news, the paper has always faced questions about its credibility."^[7] Salon.com^[8][9] and The Daily Howler^{[10][11][12][13]} haben Analysen von Artikeln veröffentlicht, bei denen sie meinen, schwerwiegende Fehler und Beispiele für Bias in den Nachrichten, die von der Times veröffentlicht wurden, gefunden zu haben.
