William Whittingham

William Whittingham (* um 1524; † 1579) war ein englischer Reformator.

Leben

Whittingham studierte in Oxford und floh vor Königin Maria I. Tudor nach Frankfurt am Main, wo er sich mit John Knox anfreundete. Er blieb mit Knox auch in Genf, doch kehrte er 1560 nach England zurück, um 1563 Dekan von Durham zu werden. Whittingham war Calvinist und zog sich die Angriffe des Erzbischofs von York zu. Whittinghams größte Leistung war die Genfer Bibel (1560); eine Gemeinschaftsarbeit, bei dem er die treibende Kraft war.
