Belep Island

Die Belep-Inseln sind eine kleine Gruppe von Inseln, die zum französischen Überseeterritorium Neukaledonien gehören und eine Kommune der Nordprovinz sind. Sie liegen nordwestlich der Inseln zwischen den Riffen, die sich auf beiden Seiten über die Hauptinsel Neukaledoniens hinaus erstrecken. Insgesamt sind sie 69.5 km² groß. Der höchste Punkt liegt 283 m.ü.M. Hauptort der Kommune ist Waala.

Geschichte

Die Belep-Inseln wurden nach einem Kanakenhäuptling benannt, der dort in alten Zeiten regierte. Die Katholische Kirche gründete dort eine Mission im Jahre 1856.
