ABC-Notation

Die ABC-Musiknotation ist ein nichtkommerzieller, offener Standard zur Notation von Musik in einem Textformat (ASCII). Dieser Text kann von bestimmten Notensatzprogrammen, Notenbild-, Tabulatur- und MIDI-erzeugenden Programmen sowie einigen Audio-Playern verstanden werden. Er kann aber auch als einfache Form der Notenschrift gelesen werden.

ABC wurde durch Steve Allen als MIME-Type registriert, Dateien mit Text in dieser Notation haben die Dateiendung '.abc'.

ABC-Notations-Standard, Geschichte und aktuelle Entwicklungen

Die ABC-Musiknotation wurde vom englischen Mathematiker und Musiker Chris Walshaw veröffentlicht, in erster Linie, um traditionelle einstimmige Melodien aus Westeuropa zu notieren. Seit seiner Veröffentlichung 1991 wurden die Möglichkeiten erweitert und die ABC-Musiknotation etwa auch verwendet, um komplexere klassische Kompositionen zu notieren.

Anfang 2006 ist der gültige Standard Version 1.6, Version 1.7.6 und 2.0 liegen im Entwurf vor. Verschiedene Erweiterungen des Standards werden bereits von einigen Programmen verwendet. Henrik Norbeck hat eine Version des Standards im BNF-Format erstellt.

Als Beispiel für ABC-Musiknotation hier die Transkription eines Stückes aus einer fränkischen Musikantenhandschrift von 1784:
