Der Boldo (Peumus boldus) ist eine Pflanzenart, die zur Familie der Monimiengewächse (Monimiaceae) gehört.

Beschreibung

Peumus boldus ist ein immergrüner Strauch oder kleiner Baum, der Wuchshöhen von bis 6 m erreicht. Die Laubblätter sind eiförmig, ganzrandig und lederartig und brüchig.

Die Blüten sind in traubigen Blütenständen angeordnet. Die stark duftenden Blüten sind weiß oder gelb. Die Beeren sind klein und gelblich-grün.

Verbreitung

Peumus boldus ist an trockene Klimazonen angepasst. Sie stammt ursprünglich aus Chile. Diese Art kommt jedoch verwildert auch im Mittelmeerraum, vor allem in Nordafrika vor.

Verwendung

Das Holz wird genutzt.

Boldo-Blätter werden in der peruanischen, argentinischen und chilenischen Volksmedizin als Heilpflanze, unter anderem gegen Magen-Darm-Beschwerden verwendet. Die Pflanze wirkt krampflösend und regt die Gallenabsonderung in den Leberzellen an. Boldo-Blätter können auch als Gewürz oder Tee gebraucht werden, z.B. im Matetee. Sie enthalten unter anderem Alkaloide (v. a. Boldin), 1,8-Cineol und Ascaridol[1].
