Bruno Pontecorvo

Bruno Pontecorvo (* 22. August 1913 in Pisa; † 24. September 1993 in Dubna, Russland) war ein italienischer Physiker. Er machte bedeutende Forschungen im Bereich der Neutrinos.

Pontecorvo, der aus einer reichen jüdischen Familie in Pisa stammte, war der Bruder des Genetikers Guido Pontecorvo und des Regisseurs Gillo Pontecorvo. Er studierte in Rom und arbeitete in den 1930er Jahren mit Enrico Fermi an der Erforschung der Neutrinos. 1940 floh er aus Italien über Frankreich in die USA und nahm dort an den Forschungen zum Bau der Atombombe teil.

Zunächst in Kanada, seit 1948 in Großbritannien, verschwand Pontecorvo in den 1950er Jahren in Finnland. Erst 1955 meldete er sich in der russischen Prawda zurück und forderte westliche Wissenschaftler auf, nur noch an einer zivilen Atomenergienutzung zu forschen. Den Rest seines Lebens verbrachte er mit seiner Familie in Russland, wo er 1993 verstarb.
