Die Bundesbehörde United States Census Bureau, offiziell Bureau of the Census (etwa Volkszählungsbehörde) mit Sitz in Suitland (Maryland) ist Teil des Handelsministeriums der Vereinigten Staaten. Sie wurde 1903 gegründet und hat heute etwa 12.000 Mitarbeiter.[1]

Die Behörde agiert gemäß Title 13 des United States Code (USC). Behördenleiter ist der Director of the Census, der vom Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten vorgeschlagen und vom Senat bestätigt wird.[2] Derzeitiger Leiter ist Steve H. Murdock, sein Vertreter (Executive Assistant) ist Betty Ann Saucier.

Hauptaufgabe der Behörde ist die Volkszählung, der den Zensus United States Census bildet. Die Bevölkerung der Vereinigten Staaten ist mindestens einmal alle zehn Jahre statistisch zu erfassen, hiernach richtet sich z. B. die Verteilung der Abgeordneten im Repräsentantenhauses. Ebenfalls erstellt werden Statistiken über Geografie, die Bevölkerung (u.a. Alter, Einkommen) und Wirtschaft. Es hat 12 Regionalämter (regional offices), die temporär für die zehnjährigen Zählungen aufgestockt werden. Der alleinige Zweck der Zählungen und der Statistik ist es, allgemeine statistische Informationen zu erhalten. Antworten werden zwar einzeln (je Einwohner, Unternehmen) erfasst und erstellt, veröffentlicht werden aber nur konsolidierte, allgemeine Statistiken. Hierbei soll der Datenschutz oberste Priorität haben. Es dürfen per Gesetz keine Daten (weder durch das Amt, noch durch Mitarbeiter) veröffentlicht werden, die Rückschlüsse auf einzelne Personen, Haushalte oder Unternehmen zulassen.

Diese gliedern sich wiederum in neun Unterbereiche auf.

Die letzte Volkszählung (United States Census 2000) fand im Jahr 2000 statt, die nächste Volkszählung findet 2010 statt.
