Geographie

Die Stadt liegt im östlichen Nigerdelta im Südosten Nigerias am gleichnamigen Fluss.

Geschichte

Der Ort ist im 19. Jahrhundert vom Volk der Ibo während der britischen Kolonialzeit nahe einem Militärstützpunkt als kleines Dorf gegründet worden. Er entwickelte sich später zu einem Handels- und Verkehrszentrum der Region.

1929 kam es in Aba zu einem Aufstand der weiblichen Bevölkerung der Stadt gegen die britische Steuerpolitik. Durch die Einnahme der Hauptstadt Enugu des von Nigeria abtrünnigen Bundesstaates Biafra im Oktober 1967 war Aba vorübergehend provisorischer Sitz der Regierung des Staates.

Wirtschaft

Die Umgebung von Aba wird landwirtschaftlich genutzt. Es werden Palmöl und Palmnusskerne gewonnen sowie Kolanüsse geerntet. Bedeutend sind auch die Herstellung von Textilien, pharmazeutischen Produkten, Schuhen und Seife.
