Andrea Ghez

Andrea Mia Ghez (* 16. Juni 1965 in New York City) ist eine US-amerikanische Astronomin.

Ghez studierte Physik am Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Bachelor 1987) und ihren Master Abschluss 1989 am Caltech, wo sie 1992 promoviert wurde. Danach war sie 1992/93 als Post-Doktorandin und Hubble Research Fellow am Stewart Observatorium der University of Arizona. 1994 wurde sie Assistant Professor, 1997 Associate Professor und 2000 Professor für Astronomie an der University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Ghez wandte neue Techniken (Speckle Optik und später Adaptive Optik) an. Damit konnte sie in der Infrarotastronomie zum Beispiel sich eng umkreisende Doppelsternsysteme auflösen und so neue Erkenntnisse zur Entstehung von Sternen gewinnen. Insbesondere untersuchte sie aber mit diesen Techniken mit anderen über mehrere Jahre die Bewegung Sterne im Zentrum der Milchstraße (Sagittarius A*) am Keck Teleskop auf Hawaii und konnte - wie auch unabhängig Wissenschaftler am Very Large Telescope um Reinhard Genzel - den Nachweis eines supermassereichen Schwarzen Lochs führen. Dieses hat eine Masse von mehr als 4 Millionen Sonnenmassen. Die in der Nähe beobachteten Sterne bewegten sich mit bis zu 4 % der Lichtgeschwindigkeit (12000 km /s). Sie entdeckte dabei auch das überraschend junge Alter einiger Sterne nahe dem Schwarzen Loch.[1]

1998 erhielt sie den Newton-Lacy-Pierce-Preis für Astronomie, 1994 den Annie-Jump-Cannon-Preis für Astronomie, 2006 den Aaronson Award, 2004 den Sackler Prize und 2008 war sie MacArthur Fellow. Sie ist Mitglied der National Academy of Sciences (2004) und der American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Sie ist seit 1993 verheiratet.
