Bernard Smith (Kunsthistoriker)

Bernard William Smith (* 3. Oktober 1916 in Sydney; † 2. September 2011) war ein australischer Kunsthistoriker und Kunstkritiker.

Bernard Smith studierte an der Universität Sydney und in London am Warburg Institute und am Courtauld Institute of Art der Universität London, und an der Australian National University. Smith unterrichtete von 1935 bis 1944 am New South Wales Department of Education and Training, danach war er bis 1952 Kurator der Art Gallery of New South Wales. Er war von 1955 bis 1963 Dozent an der kunsthistorischen Fakultät der University of Melbourne. Er verließ dann für drei Jahre die Universität und wurde Kunstkritiker der Melbourner Zeitung The Age, ging aber 1967 als Gründungsmitglied des Fachbereiches für Zeitgenössische Kunst und Direktor des Power Institute of Fine Arts an die Universität von Sydney zurück. Smith war anschließend von 1977 bis 1980 Präsident der Australian Academy of the Humanities. Er ist Mitglied der kunstgeschichtlichen Fakultät der Universität Melbourne.

Der französische Staat machte ihn zu einem Chevalier des Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
