Down the Aisle (The Wedding Song) ist eine Doo-Wop Ballade der US-amerikanischen Girlgroup Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles aus dem Jahre 1963. Das Lied wurde ein Hit für die Gruppe aus Philadelphia und folgt der kontroversen Veröffentlichung ihres "Debüt-Hits" I Sold My Heart to the Junkman aus dem Jahre 1962.

Hintergrundinformationen

1963, nach der kontroversen Veröffentlichung des Hits I Sold My Heart to the Junkman, bei dem die Bluebelles für den Lead-Gesang sorgten, kamen Gerüchte auf, dass der Titel bereits von einer anderen Girlgroup aufgenommen wurde. Somit wurde die andere Girlgroup als Songwriter aufgelistet, um Urheberrechtsverletzungen zu vermeiden. Danach nahmen Labelle weitere Stücke wie Go On und Cool Water auf und der Erfolg wuchs, der nächste große Hit blieb jedoch zunächst aus.^[1]

Letztlich veröffentlichte Newtown 1963 Down the Aisle (The Wedding Song), das von einem Hochzeitstag handelt. Der Titel war einer der ersten, der auf den Sendern der Pop- und R&B-Stationen gleichermaßen beliebt war. Später war das Lied etwa beliebt auf Kellerpartys, bei denen Stehblues getanzt wurde. In den amerikanischen Billboard Hot 100 erreichte der Titel Platz 37 und Platz 14 in den Hot R&B Singles-Charts.

Das Lied ist dafür bekannt, dass Patti LaBelle am Ende des Titels im Belting singt, gleichzeitig singen ihre Backgroundsängerin in einer tiefen Oktave. Im gleichen Jahr nahm Labelle noch eine veränderte Version des Liedes auf.
