Das 1995 von Michael Rubin gegründete E-Commerce Unternehmen ist spezialisiert auf die Entwicklung und dem Betrieb von Onlineshops für sogenannte Brick and Mortar Handelsmarken und Retailer und hat nach eigenen Angaben mehr als 500 Kunden, darunter Toys'R'Us, RadioShack, Dick's Sporting Goods, Sports Authority, Ace Hardware oder Timberland.

Seit Frühjahr 2010 ist GSI Commerce an dem deutschen Hersteller von Onlineshops Intershop Communications beteiligt.

Ende März 2011 gab Ebay bekannt, dass sie GSI Commerce übernehmen wird. Ebay gab bekannt, dass die Übernahme insgesamt rund 2,4 Milliarden Dollar kosten wird und soll im dritten Quartal 2011 abgeschlossen sein.
