ICIMOD ist die Abkürzung für "International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development", das Internationale Zentrum für Integrierte Entwicklung in Bergregionen. ICIMOD ist ein auf internationale Kooperation angelegtes, unabhängiges Zentrum, das sich zum Ziel gesetzt hat, das Wissen über Gebirgs- und Bergregionen zu erfassen und zu sammeln und die daraus resultierenden Fähigkeiten und die Expertise zur Verbesserung der Existenzgrundlagen der Bergvölker im Raum von Hindukush, Karakorum und Himalaya (mit dem anschließenden Gebieten des tibetischen Hochlandes) zu nutzen. ICIMOD dient dabei acht regionalen Mitgliedsländern (RMC) des Hindukusch-Karakorum-Himalaya-Gebiets (HKH region): Afghanistan, Bangladesch, Bhutan, China, Indien, Myanmar, Nepal und Pakistan - und darüber hinaus allen Gebirgsbewohnern weltweit. 1983 gegründet ist ICIMOD in Kathmandu, Nepal, angesiedelt und gewährleistet so eine Partnerschaft seiner regionalen Mitgliedsländer, Partner-Institutionen und der Geberländer, die sich in der Entwicklungsarbeit für eine bessere Zukunft der Menschen und der Umwelt in der erweiterten HKH-Region engagieren.
