Max Cresswell

Max John Cresswell (* 19. November 1939 in Wellington) ist ein neuseeländischer Philosoph und Logiker, der sich insbesondere mit der Philosophie der Logik, Modallogik und formaler Semantik beschäftigt. Daneben hat Cressell auch zur Philosophie der Antike, zu Logik des 19. Jahrhunderts und zu John Locke veröffentlicht^[1] Überragende Bedeutung erlangte das Lehrbuch Einführung in die Modallogik (An Introduction to Modal Logic, London, Methuen, 1968, dt, 1978), das er gemeinsam mit seinem früheren Lehrer und Kollegen George Edward Hughes verfasste. Die Introduction wahr eines der ersten Modernen Lehrbücher auf diesem Gebiet und hat wesentlich zu seiner akademischen Verbreitung beigetragen. Als Standardwerk wurde es seitdem erst durch seinen Nachfolger A New Introduction to Modal Logic (ebenfalls mit G.E. Hughes London, Routledge, 1996) abgelöst. Cresswell war bis zu seiner Emeritierung im Jahr 2001 lange Jahre Lehrstuhlinhaber an der Victoria University of Wellington, unterbrochen durch zahlreiche Gastprofessuren im Ausland.^[2] Er ist Mitglied des Center for Logic, Language and Computation an der Victoria.

Akademischer Werdegang

Nach einen MA an der University of New Zealand im Jahr 1960 erfolgte auf der Basis einer Commonwealth Scholarship ein Promotionsstudium an der University of Manchester, wo er Schüler von Arthur Norman Prior wurde. mit der Erlangung des PhD im Jahr 1964. Nach der Rückkehr nach Neusseland wurde Creswell lecturer an der Victoria University of Wellington, 1967 zum Senior lecturer, 1972 reader, und nach dem Erwerb des LitD 1972 schließlich Professor. Es folgten zahlreiche Gastprofessuren und Forschungsaufenthalte auf der Basis von Stipendien im Ausland. 2001 wurde Creswell emeritiert, nahm aber in Folge eine weitere Professur an der University of Auckland (2004-2008) und seit 2009 wieder an der Victoria wahr.^[3]
