Mufindi ist einer von sieben Distrikten der Iringa-Region im zentralen Teil von Tansania. Es ist in 28 Bezirke unterteilt. Die Volkszählung 2002 ergab eine Einwohnerzahl von 238.000 Einwohnern[1], von denen 47 Prozent männlich waren. Mufindi grenzt im Norden an Kilolo und Iringa Urban („Iringa Stadt“), im Osten an die Region Morogoro, im Süden an Njombe sowie im Westen an die Region Mbeya.

Teeplantage im Hochland

Mufindi ist bergig und eine der kühlsten und feuchtesten Regionen Tansanias. Oberhalb des Rift Valley gelegen, erreichen seine Höhen mehr als 2000 Meter über dem Meer. Die Flora und Fauna sind überaus vielfältig, dichter Urwald und agrarisch genutzte Flächen wechseln sich ab. Angebaut werden vor allem Tee, aber auch Kartoffeln, Mais, Hirse und Sonnenblumen. Obwohl schon seit Jahrzehnten keine Löwen und Leoparden mehr gesichtet wurden, sollen sie hier noch ihren Lebensraum haben. Auch für Ornithologen ist Mufindi eine wichtige Beobachtungsregion.[2] Der wichtigste Teeproduzent der Region (sowie der zweitgrößte Tansanias) ist mit über 3500 Angestellten die Mufindi Tea Company, die in anderen Landesteilen auch als Kaffeeproduzent tätig ist.[3]Mufindi war die Kernzelle der Teeproduktion in Tansania. Um 1930 wurde die erste Teefabrik eröffnet, in den Jahren 1930 bis 1934 kostenlos Saatgut an die Farmer, die zumeist europäische Siedler waren, verteilt. 1934 wurden auf 1000 ha 20 Tonnen produziert.[4]

Seit 1997 werden in Zusammenarbeit und mit Finanzierungshilfe des norwegischen TreeFarms AS im Hochland Aufforstungsmaßnahmen durchgeführt.[5] Seit 2008 betreibt auch die norwegische Green Resources AS ein ähnliches Projekt.[6] Mit diesen Projekten versucht das Land, den eigenen Energiemarkt nachhaltig zu entwickeln, das heißt, mithilfe Erneuerbarer Energien unabhängiger von fossilen Brennstoffen zu werden.

Daneben gibt es noch eine Reihe von weiteren internationalen Förderungen, so beispielsweise von einer belgischen Organisation, die die (Eigen-)Versorgungssicherheit mit Lebensmitteln für die Bevölkerung sicherstellen will[7]

90 Prozent der Bevölkerung gehören zum Stamm der Hehe, die durch ihren erbitterten Widerstand gegen die deutschen Besatzer eine gewisse Bekanntheit erlangten.
