Whitney Houston ist der Titel des Debütalbums von Whitney Houston, das im Februar 1985 erschien.

Geschichte

Nachdem Houston eine Performance in einer New Yorker Diskothek hinlegte, entdeckte Clive Davis sie und glaubte an ihr Potenzial zum Superstar. Sie unterschrieb daraufhin ihren Plattenvertrag. Anfang 1984 begannen die Arbeiten am Album, zunächst fiel Davis die Auswahl der Songs des Albums schwer. Da zu dieser Zeit ähnliche Pop- und Dance-Künstler beliebt waren, fühlten sich viele Songwriter durch Houstons Gesangsstimme inspiriert, und nach zwei Jahren Arbeit am Album wurde es veröffentlicht. Als Songwriter konnten unter anderem Narada Michael Walden, Michael Masser und Kashif gewonnen werden.

Anfänglich war das Album noch nicht erfolgreich, doch nach der Veröffentlichung des Songs You Give Good Love konnte das Album vom Erfolg profitieren und landete schlussendlich an der Spitze der Billboard Hot 100.

Von allen Alben, die Houston veröffentlichte, verkaufte sich dieses am besten und wurde über 25 Millionen Mal verkauft. In der Liste der 500 besten Alben aller Zeiten des Rolling Stone erreichte es Platz 254.

Aufgrund der Popularität wurde das Album von Kritikern und der Musikindustrie gelobt, es wurde für die Grammy Awards 1986 nominiert in der Kategorie Album des Jahres, verlor aber gegen Phil Collins’ Album No Jacket Required. Des Weiteren gewann der Song Saving All My Love for You bei den Grammy Awards in der Kategorie Beste weibliche Gesangsdarbietung.^[1]
