William John Bankes (* 11. Dezember 1786 in Kingston Lacy, Dorset; † 15. April 1855 in Venedig) war ein englischer Forscher, Ägyptologe und Abenteurer während der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Seine Entdeckung eines Obelisken in Philae trug maßgeblich zur Entzifferung der Ägyptischen Hieroglyphen durch Jean-François Champollion bei.[1]

Familie und Ausbildung

William John Bankes entstammt der englischen Adelsfamilie Bankes. Er war das zweitälteste Kind von Henry Bankes und Frances Woodley und hatte fünf weitere Geschwister.[2] Da sein ältester Bruder Henry 1806 starb, wurde er der Haupterbe. William John Bankes besuchte die Westminster School in London, studierte am Trinity College in Cambridge und erlangte 1808 den Bachelor of Arts und 1811 den Master of Arts.[3][4]
