Kaffee (Coffea) ist eine Pflanzengattung aus der Familie der Rötegewächse (Rubiaceae) mit etwa 90 Arten. Die berühmtesten unter ihnen sind die als Plantagenpflanzen bevorzugten Arabica-Kaffee (C. arabica) und Robusta-Kaffee (Coffea canephora), letztere bekannter unter dem, nur noch als Synonym geltenden, Namen Coffea robusta.

Beschreibung

Coffea-Arten sind immergrüne, kleine Bäume oder Sträucher. Die gegenständigen, gestielten Laubblätter sind glänzend. Die Nebenblätter können klein bis groß sein.

Es werden vielblütige, zymöse Blütenstände gebildet. Die duftenden, zwittrigen Blüten sind vier- neunzählig. Die weißen Kronblätter sind röhrig verwachsen; wobei die Röhre kürzer ist als die Kronzipfel. Der Stempel besitzt eine zweilappige Narbe.

In den Früchten (Steinfrucht), den so genannten Kaffee-Kirschen, befinden sich als Samen je zwei Kaffeebohnen, selten auch drei. Sie dienen als Rohstoff für das Heißgetränk Kaffee. Dazu werden die Bohnen auf unterschiedliche Weise getrocknet, (mit dem oder ohne das Fruchtfleisch der Kirsche) fermentiert und später geröstet.

Heimat und Anbaugebiete

Alle Arten haben ihre ursprüngliche Heimat im tropischen Afrika, Madagaskar und den Maskarenen.

Seit dem 17. Jahrhundert wird in Europa Kaffee getrunken, verbreitet durch die Araber und die Türken. Ursprünglich stammt die Kaffeepflanze aus den Hochländern Äthiopiens und des Sudans, wird heute aber weltweit in der tropischen und subtropischen Zone angebaut.

Pflege

Der ideale Standort der Kaffeepflanze (coffea arabica) ist hell, aber ohne pralle Mittagssonne. Im Sommer z.B. im Garten, an einem halbschattigen Standort. Die Temperaturen sollten währen des Sommers ab 20 Grad betragen und während des Winters zwischen 15 und 20 Grad liegen. Die Topferde muss gut wasserdurchlässig sein, gegossen wird mäßig, aber regelmäßig, das Pflanzsubstrat sollte gleichmäßig feucht gehalten werden. Staunässe wird nicht vertragen, der Topfballen darf aber durchaus mal antrocknen. Während des Winters wird, abhängig von der Temperatur, weniger gegossen.

Gedüngt wird Coffea Arabica während des Sommers einmal monatlich mit der halben Konzentration und während des Winters ca. alle zwei Monate.

Die Kaffeepflanze bevorzugt eine hohe Luftfeuchtigkeit.

Systematik

Es gibt etwa 90 Arten in der Gattung Kaffee (Coffea). Es werden zwei Untergattungen Baracoffea und Coffea unterschieden.
