Die ambulant erworbene Pneumonie (engl. community acquired pneumonia (CAP)) bezeichnet solche Lungenentzündungen, deren auslösende Erreger außerhalb des Krankenhauses aufgenommen wurden.
Die angewandte Klassifikation teilt Lungenentzündungen nach klinisch praktischen Gesichtspunkten ein. Sie fand ihre Etablierung nach einer Publikation von M. Woodhead et al. (Eur Respir Mon 1997; 3: 1-12). Danach gibt es neben der ambulant erworbenen Pneumonie die nosokomiale Lungenentzündung und die Lungenentzündung des immunsupprimierten Patienten. Nach dieser Einteilung kann das mutmaßliche Erregerspektrum der Lungenentzündung eingeschätzt werden und die kalkulierte Antibiotikatherapie kann danach ausgerichtet werden. Es kann eine Prognose für den Krankheitsverlauf abgegeben werden.
Als bedeutende Volksseuche (Inzidenz 2-5/1000) ist die ambulant erworbene Pneumonie Gegenstand von Untersuchungen durch das Kompetenznetz ambulant erworbene Pneumonie (CAPNETZ e.V.), das durch das Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung gefördert wird.
Seit dem Jahr 2005 gehört die ambulant erworbene Pneumonie gemäß Beschluss des Gemeinsamen Bundesausschusses zu den dokumentationspflichtigen Leistungen für die externe Qualitätssicherung der Krankenhäuser, die von der Bundesgeschäftsstelle Qualitätssicherung fachlich betreut wird.
