Die Continental Shelf Convention der Vereinten Nationen ist ein internationales Abkommen zur Regelung des Seerechtes. Es wurde 1958 entwickelt und stellt einen ersten Versuch dar, die Frage nach Rechten der Küstenstaaten zur Ausbeutung von unterseeischen Rohstoffen zu klären. Weiterentwickelt wurde die Konvention durch das Seerechtsübereinkommen von 1982.
Die Konvention legte fest, dass Küstenstaaten ein exklusives Recht zur Ausbeutung von Bodenschätzen auf ihrem Kontinentalschelf bis zu einer Wassertiefe von 200 Metern beantragen können. Überlappt dieses Gebiet zwischen mehreren Staaten (wie beispielsweise in der Nordsee) gilt meist das Äquidistanzprinzip, das die Grenzlinie in der Mitte zwischen beiden Küsten zieht. Die Gewässer, die nach der Konvention beansprucht werden, gelten nicht als Territorium des betreffenden Staates.
Der Diskussionsprozess um exklusive Rechte von Staaten weit außerhalb ihrer Hoheitsgewässer begann 1945, als die USA die ausschließliche Jurisdiktion über ihren Kontinentalschelf für sich in Anspruch nahmen.
