Deadwood ist eine Stadt in Lawrence County (South Dakota). Im Jahr 2000 hatte die Stadt 1.380 Bewohner. Durch die Stadtgründung im exterritorialen Siouxgebiet während eines legendären Goldrauschs und durch die historischen Stätten in der Umgebung der Black Hills zieht der Ort jährlich Tausende von Touristen an. Die Stadtgründung ist Handlung der HBO-Fernsehserie Deadwood.

Geschichte

Der Ort Deadwood wurde 1876 gegründet und entstand aus einem Zeltlager von Goldgräbern, die es während des Goldrauschs in die Black Hills gezogen hatte. Da die Black Hills aber Indianer-Gebiet waren, kam es immer wieder zu Auseinandersetzungen mit den Sioux.

Das Gem im Jahr 1878

Bekanntester Saloon und zugleich Bordell der Stadt war das am 7. April 1877 eröffnete Gem Variety Theater unter der Führung von Al Swearengen.

Am 26. September 1879 wurde die Stadt durch einen Brand fast vollkommen zerstört. Seit dem 1. November 1989 ist in Deadwood offiziell das Glücksspiel genehmigt.

Personen

Prominenteste Bürger der Stadt waren der Revolverheld Wild Bill Hickok, der Saloonbesitzer Al Swearengen, die Western-Heldin Calamity Jane und Marshal Seth Bullock. Eine Zeit lang hielten sich auch die beiden berüchtigten Revolverhelden Doc Holliday und Wyatt Earp in Deadwood auf.
