Delphos ist eine Stadt im Allen County und im Van Wert County im US-amerikanischen Bundesstaat Ohio. Sie liegt in der Metropolregion von Lima, dem County Seat des Allen Countys. Delphos hat eine Bevölkerung von knapp 7.000 Einwohnern (Volkszählung 2000)[1].

Geschichte

Der deutsche Auswanderer Ferdinand Bredeick gründete Delphos 1845 im Great Black Swamp (deutsch Großer Schwarzer Sumpf), einem Sumpfgebiet am Miamikanal. Für eine lange Zeit wuchs Delphos schneller und war bedeutender als die Nachbarorte Lima und Van Wert, da Delphos verkehrsgünstig am Kreuzungspunkt von Miamikanal und Pennsylvania Railroad lag.[2] 1851 wurde Delphos eine eigene Gemeinde. Es feiert seitdem jedes Jahr das traditionelle "Canal Day Festival".

Delphos war ab 1. Januar 1883 Endbahnhof einer Schmalspurbahn, der Cleveland, Delphos and St. Louis Railroad, die bei ihrer Eröffnung nur bis Mount Blanchard fuhr. Bis zum Juni 1883 wurde sie bis nach Carey verlängert. Nach verschiedenen Reorganisationen und Fusionen der Eisenbahngesellschaften wurde diese Eisenbahnlinie 1890 auf Normalspur ausgebaut. Aus der Cleveland, Delphos and St. Louis Railroad wurde die Pittsburg, Akron and Western Railroad (PA&W). Diese wurde 1895 zur Northern Ohio Railway und an die Lake Erie and Western Railroad verpachtet.

Bildung

Delphos verfügt über zwei High Schools[3][4], eine Grundschule[5] und eine städtische Schule[6]. Die Jefferson High ist für ihre zahlreichen American Football-Mannschaften und -Vereine bekannt.

Der Ort unterhält die Städtepartnerschaft Verl–Delphos, die sich aus der Herkunft des Stadtgründers Bredeick aus Verl erklärt.
