Der Begriff Do it yourself [ˌduːɪtjəˈsɛlf] (auch: D.I.Y., DIY) kommt aus der englischen Sprache und bedeutet Mach es selbst.

Geschichte

Die Bewegung entstand in den 1950er Jahren in England, eroberte schnell den Kontinent, und kann allgemein als Kultur des Amateurs (im Gegensatz zum professionellen Experten oder Spezialisten) bezeichnet werden.

DIY heißt für seine Anhänger oft, die eigene Kraft als Triebfeder für Veränderungen zu sehen. Die Do-it-yourself-Bewegung der 1960er und 1970er ist geprägt vom Glauben an Improvisation, Eigeninitiative und oft einem Misstrauen gegenüber Produkten der Industrie.

Oftmals sind Spaß, Kreativität oder finanzielle Gründe der Anlass, Dinge selber zu fertigen.

DIY als Wirtschaftszweig

In der Betriebswirtschaftslehre bezeichnet DIY die Branche der Baumärkte, die sich auf Materialien für Heimwerker spezialisiert hat.

Ab November 1957 gab es die erste deutsche Do-it-yourself-Illustrierte Selbst ist der Mann aus dem Verlag Brink & Herting in Hamburg. Heute gehört die Zeitschrift zur Bauer Verlagsgruppe und hatte 2009 eine Monatsauflage von 75.200 Exemplaren[1].
