Elizabeth McCombs

Elizabeth Reid McCombs (* 19. November 1873 in Kaiapoi; † 17. Juni 1935 in Christchurch) war eine neuseeländische Politikerin und die erste Frau, die in das Parlament von Neuseeland gewählt wurde.

Sie wuchs in Ashburton und Christchurch auf. Durch ihre älteren Geschwister begann sie sich für sozialistische Themen zu interessieren.

Stationen ihres Lebens:

  • 1886 starb ihr Vater, wodurch die Familie für einige Zeit in finanzielle Schwierigkeiten geriet.
  • 1903 heiratete sie James McCombs, mit dem sie später zwei eigene Kinder hatte und zwei weitere adoptierte.
  • 1921 wurde sie in den Stadtrat von Christchurch gewählt.
  • 1933 starb ihr Ehemann. Man schlug ihr vor, selbst Kandidatin für die Parlamentswahl zu werden, und sie wurde tatsächlich gewählt.

Im Parlament setzte Elizabeth McCombs sich für gleiche Bezahlung von Frauen ein und forderte eine Änderung der männerfreundlichen Arbeitslosenpolitik sowie die Einstellung von Frauen in den Polizeidienst.
