Exit Polls

Die Wahltagsbefragung (engl. exit poll) ist eine besondere Form der Wahlforschung, ursprünglich aus den USA kommend. Wähler werden noch am Wahltag beim Verlassen des Wahllokals - also nach dem Wahlvorgang - nach ihrer Wahlentscheidung gefragt. Dadurch kann man schon sehr früh den Wahlausgang prognostizieren, wenn man eine repräsentative und große Stichprobe verwendet.

Im Gegensatz zu Befragungen vor der Wahl werden bei der Wahltagsbefragung nicht die Wahlabsicht, sondern das tatsächliche Abstimmverhalten erfasst. Da nicht alle Wähler ihre Entscheidung bekanntgeben wollen oder falsche Angaben machen, hat das Ergebnis immer eine gewisse Abweichung. Auch Briefwähler können nicht berücksichtigt und müssen geschätzt werden.

Einen weiteren Nutzen ziehen viele Parteien aus diesen Umfragen. Eine rasche und genaue Analyse kann auch Dank zusätzlicher Daten wie Alter und Geschlecht erfolgen. Interessant sind in diesem Zusammenhang auch Wählerstromanalysen.

Wahltagsbefragungen können ein Indikator für Wahlfälschung sein, wenn die Ergebnisse zu stark voneinander abweichen.
